Udawalawe Safari & Elephant Transit Home Experience
Udawalawe
Set out early from Ella and enjoy a scenic drive through Sri Lanka’s changing landscapes, descending from the misty highlands towards the warmer low-country plains of Udawalawe. On arrival, embark on a 4×4 jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park, renowned for its large elephant population, open grasslands, and reservoir scenery. Watch for wild elephants, water buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles, and native birdlife as you explore the park with your safari team. The open terrain offers excellent opportunities for wildlife photography, although sightings depend on natural conditions. After the safari, visit the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, a conservation center that cares for orphaned elephant calves before their eventual release into the wild. Depending on the scheduled feeding session, you may observe the young elephants being fed while learning about the rehabilitation program. Later in the afternoon, begin the return journey to Ella, arriving by evening after a rewarding day combining wildlife observation, conservation, and Sri Lanka’s diverse landscapes.
