Udawalawe

Udawalawe is a renowned wildlife destination located on the boundary of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces of Sri Lanka. The area is best known for Udawalawe National Park, which was established in 1972 to protect the watershed of the Udawalawe Reservoir and provide sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the reservoir's construction. Covering approximately 30,821 hectares, the park consists of open grasslands, scrub forests, wetlands, and riverine habitats. These landscapes support an impressive variety of wildlife including elephants, water buffalo, spotted deer, sambar deer, crocodiles, monkeys, jackals, and more than 180 bird species. The highlight of any visit is the opportunity to observe large herds of Asian elephants roaming freely across the plains. Unlike many other wildlife parks, elephant sightings in Udawalawe are almost guaranteed throughout the year. The nearby Elephant Transit Home provides a unique chance to witness orphaned elephant calves being rehabilitated before their release back into the wild.
