Day 1
Udawalawe
Begin your day with an early hotel pickup in Colombo or Negombo and travel south through Sri Lanka’s changing countryside towards Udawalawe National Park, one of the island’s best-known destinations for wild elephant sightings. As the city gives way to rural landscapes, the journey offers a glimpse of everyday Sri Lankan life before you reach the park’s remarkable natural surroundings. Climb aboard a 4x4 safari jeep and explore open grasslands, wetlands and wooded areas in search of elephants roaming freely in their natural habitat. Keep your camera ready for possible sightings of water buffalo, deer, crocodiles, monkeys and a variety of birdlife. The park’s open terrain also creates rewarding opportunities for wildlife photography. Continue to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, a rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves, where you can observe a scheduled feeding session if it is operating during your visit.
