Tissamaharama

Tissamaharama, commonly known as "Tissa," is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest settlements with a history dating back more than 2,000 years. Once a prominent center of the ancient Kingdom of Ruhuna, the town remains an important religious and cultural destination. The town is best known for the magnificent Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara, featuring a large white stupa that dominates the skyline. Nearby lies the historic Tissa Wewa, an ancient irrigation reservoir built by early Sri Lankan kings, offering beautiful views and abundant birdlife. Today, Tissamaharama serves as the primary base for travelers visiting Yala National Park and Bundala National Park. The combination of history, wildlife, spirituality, and scenic landscapes makes it one of the most attractive destinations in southern Sri Lanka.
