Mihintale

Mihintale is one of the most significant religious and historical destinations in Sri Lanka. Located approximately 12 km east of Anuradhapura, this sacred mountain is revered as the place where Buddhism was officially introduced to the island over 2,200 years ago. According to historical chronicles, Arahat Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka of India, met King Devanampiyatissa on Mihintale mountain during a royal hunting expedition. This historic encounter led to the establishment of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, making Mihintale a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists worldwide. Visitors can climb more than 1,800 ancient granite steps to reach the summit, where several important monuments await.
