Delft Island

Delft Island, officially known as Neduntheevu, lies in the Palk Strait off the Jaffna Peninsula in Sri Lanka's Northern Province. Covering approximately 50 square kilometres, the island is famous for its distinctive limestone landscape, coral-built walls, colonial monuments, and untouched natural beauty. Unlike other parts of Sri Lanka, Delft features open grasslands, sparse vegetation, and scenic coastal views, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else on the island. One of Delft's most iconic attractions is its population of wild horses, believed to be descendants of animals introduced by Portuguese and Dutch settlers centuries ago. Visitors can also explore the historic Dutch Fort, coral stone buildings, the ancient Baobab tree brought by Arab traders, Queen's Tower, old pigeon houses, and remarkable coral fences that stretch across the island. The island's peaceful roads, traditional fishing villages, and crystal-clear waters make it a paradise for photographers, history enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and nature lovers.
