Set off early from Mirissa and travel along Sri Lanka’s southern coast through Matara and Hambantota towards Yala National Park. As coastal scenery gives way to rural landscapes and dry-zone wilderness, anticipation builds for a day exploring one of Sri Lanka’s best-known wildlife reserves. Arrive at Yala and board a 4x4 safari jeep for a game drive through designated park areas with an experienced tracker. Keep watch for leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer and colourful birdlife in their natural habitats. Although sightings depend on wildlife movements and cannot be guaranteed, each drive offers a different glimpse of Yala’s diverse ecosystems. Continue with the afternoon safari before returning to Mirissa in the evening, with scenic photo stops along the way.
