Pigeon Island

Located just a short boat ride from Nilaveli Beach near Trincomalee, Pigeon Island National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s two marine national parks. The island is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and shallow turquoise waters, making it a top destination for snorkeling and marine exploration. The island is named after the rock pigeons that inhabit it, and it features white sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, and protected coral ecosystems. Visitors can observe a wide variety of marine life including reef fish, blacktip reef sharks, sea turtles, and colorful corals. Pigeon Island is a strictly protected area, so access is regulated to preserve its fragile ecosystem. Activities include snorkeling, swimming, and guided marine observation. The best time to visit is from April to September when sea conditions are calm and visibility is excellent.
