Peradeniya

Located just outside Kandy, Peradeniya is home to the world-renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, which features over 4,000 species of plants, orchids, palm avenues, and beautifully landscaped gardens. The area lies along the Mahaweli River, adding to its scenic beauty. Peradeniya has historical significance dating back to the Kandyan Kingdom and later became a major botanical research center during the British colonial period. Today, it serves as both a scientific institution and a major tourist attraction. Visitors can explore expansive gardens, orchid houses, spice collections, giant bamboo groves, and scenic walking paths. The surrounding area is also known for its peaceful suburban environment and proximity to Kandy’s cultural attractions. The best time to visit is from January to April when the weather is dry and ideal for walking and sightseeing.
