Planning a holiday should be exciting, stress-free and filled with memorable experiences. Unfortunately, not every traveller enjoys a smooth journey when booking through an unverified or poorly managed travel company.

Recently, a group of 6 adults and 3 children from Brisbane, Australia, arrived in Sri Lanka expecting to begin their long-awaited family holiday. Everything appeared normal when they were met at the airport and transferred to their first accommodation in Sigiriya.

However, later that evening the situation quickly changed.

The guesthouse informed the travellers that payment for their accommodation had not been received. Attempts to contact the booking agent proved difficult, leaving the guests confused and concerned. After repeated calls, payment was eventually made and the group was allowed to continue their stay.

Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of their problems.

Section 01

What Went Wrong During the Tour?

The following day, transportation was arranged for the group's sightseeing programme. During conversations with the driver, the travellers discovered that payment for the transport service had also not been received.

As the tour continued, communication with the booking agent became increasingly difficult. Phone calls went unanswered and support was limited.

When the group arrived in Kandy, another issue arose. The transportation provider informed them that no payment had been received and could not continue operating the service without settlement.

Suddenly, the travellers found themselves in an unfamiliar destination without clear support or assistance from the company that had originally sold the holiday

Section 02

Why Local Support Is Important

When travelling overseas, having a reliable local support team can make a significant difference.

Fortunately, one member of the group had previously received a recommendation for Apple Vacations Sri Lanka from another traveller who had visited the country.

After contacting our team, we immediately stepped in to assist with transportation, accommodation arrangements and local coordination, helping the group continue their holiday with minimal disruption.

While the situation was stressful, it highlighted an important lesson for anyone planning a Sri Lanka holiday.

Section 03

How to Verify a Sri Lanka Tour Operator Before Booking

Before making any payment, travellers should always conduct basic checks to ensure they are booking with a legitimate and professional tour operator.

Important things to verify include: • Company registration details • Tourism industry memberships • Local operating licenses • Genuine customer reviews • Physical office presence • Emergency contact availability • Transparent payment and cancellation policies

A reputable company should be able to provide this information without hesitation.

Section 04

Why Booking with a Registered Tour Operator Matters

Registered tour operators are accountable to local regulations and industry standards. They maintain professional relationships with hotels, transport providers, guides and suppliers to ensure travellers receive the services they have paid for.

Working with a registered operator can help reduce the risk of:
• Unpaid hotel reservations • Cancelled transportation • Last-minute itinerary disruptions • Lack of local support • Communication issues during travel

Most importantly, it provides travellers with peace of mind throughout their journey.

Section 05

Questions You Should Ask Before Making Payment

Before confirming your holiday, consider asking:

• Is the company registered with the relevant tourism authorities? • Who provides local support in Sri Lanka? • Is there a 24/7 emergency contact number? • Are hotels and transport booked directly or through third parties? • Can recent customer references be provided? • What happens if there is an emergency during the trip?

The answers can reveal a great deal about the reliability of the company you are booking with.

Section 06

Travel with Confidence

A Sri Lanka holiday should be about exploring ancient cities, experiencing wildlife safaris, discovering tea country landscapes and relaxing on beautiful beaches—not worrying about whether your hotel or transport provider has been paid.

Choosing a professional and registered tour operator helps ensure your holiday runs smoothly from arrival to departure, allowing you to focus on creating unforgettable memories. Whether you are planning a family holiday, honeymoon, luxury escape or group tour, always take the time to verify who you are booking with before making payment. A little research today can save a great deal of stress tomorrow.
